OMAHA — Area athletes brought home four more medals Saturday on the last day of the Nebraska State Track and Field Championships at Burke Stadium.
Homer junior Janessa Overgaard kicked off the day by tying her personal best in the high jump. The 5-foot-2 mark put her in a three-way tie four fourth place, joined by Kendyl O’Hare of Kearney Catholic and Tali Erwin of Laurel-Concord-Coleridge.
Ponca’s Zyan Conrad earned his second medal of the state meet in one of the most amazing comebacks seen in some time. Running in last place in the second heat of the Class C boys 800-meter run, he turned on the jets and ran a 58-second final lap to come home in eighth place with a time of 2:00.32.
Ponca sophomore Ava Brennan earned a sixth-place medal in a tough field in the Class C girls 1,600-meter run, finishing in a time of 5:22.03.
Closing out the area effort was Tri County Northeast senior Bryan Isom, who finished his high school career with a medal-winning effort in the Class C boys 300-meter hurdles, finishing sixth in a time of 40.62 seconds.
In the overall team standings, Ponca’s boys tied for 28th with 6 points and TCNE tied for 43rd with 3 points. Homer’s boys came up empty in the scoring column. Perkins County edged out West Holt 61-57 for the team title.
On the girls side, Ponca tied for 18th with 14 points and Homer tied for 27th with 6 points, while the TCNE girls did not score. Kearney Catholic scored 79 points to win the Class C title, while Syracuse was second with 50.
Other class team titles included Dundy County Startton with a sweep of the Class D titles. Winners in Class A were the Kearney boys and Papillion-LaVista South girls, and Class B champs were the Waverly boys and Bennington girls.
