Area golfers compete at state

GRAND ISLAND — Three area golfers qualified for the Nebraska Class C State Boys Golf Championships and competed in the two-day tournament at Jackrabbit Run Golf Course.

Ponca senior Jace Wahls led the area effort, tying for 22nd overall with a two-day total of 155 over 36 holes.

Wahls shot an 84 during the opening round, but came back strong with a one-under par 71 on the second day, one of only five golfers in the 101-player field to post a below-par round during the tournament.

Also representing Ponca was sophomore Landon Uthof, who shot consecutive rounds of 82 to card a 164 and tie for 49th.

Tri County Northeast’s Ben Jorgensen competed at state for the fourth straight year, and the Wolfpack senior shot rounds of 79 and 87 to finish tied for 53rd with a 166.

Nash Malone was the individual state champion and led Kearney Catholic to the team title. he shot a 5-under par 139 to claim top honors. The Stars shot a 593 as a team to finish nine shots ahead of runner-up Archbishop Bergan.
