Late goal sinks SSC state hopes

OMAHA — A late second-half goal proved to be the only score of the game as Omaha South derailed South Sioux City’s state title hopes in a 1-0 decision Friday in the Class A Boys State Soccer Championships at Morrison Stadium.

The two teams engaged in a fantastic back-and-forth battle that saw several scoring opportunities through the first 40 minutes.
South Sioux had the first real opportunity in the eighth minute as a shot sailed high of the mark, and Omaha South countered with an opportunity of its own a few minutes later that went begging.

Josue Carrusco was outstanding in goal throughout the match, saving a number of opportunities as the two defenses held the other scoreless until the 73rd minute.

Coming off a Cardinal attack, the Packers countered and got a 4-on-3 situation that saw Julian Rodriguez pass to Ryan Kubiak, who scored from the left side for the game’s only goal.

SSC had a number of chances and a late collision in the Omaha South box went without a call, and a final opportunity in the closing seconds was stopped by the Packer goalie to seal the win.

The Cardinals end the season with a 15-5 record. Omaha South will face Omaha Westside in Tuesday’s 8 p.m. championship game.
