The South Sioux City Little League Majors couldn’t overcome an early deficit in a 17-7 loss Saturday to Omaha Memorial in the semifinals of the Nebraska Little League State Tournament in Kearney.
Omaha Memorial jumped on South Sioux City early, building a 7-1 lead after two innings and pulling away late to end the local boys’ hopes of playing for a state championship on Sunday.
South Sioux City got a run in the bottom of the first when Jackson Selk doubled and scored on a passed ball that cut the early deficit to 4-1.
Memorial followed with three in the second, one in the third and five in the fourth to make it 13-1 before the locals scored again, putting up three in the bottom of the fourth. Jayce Kramer singled and scored on an RBI single by Gabe Begay, who later came home on an error, followed by a passed ball that plated Gavin Verdoorn to cut the lead to 13-4.
Memorial scored four more in the fifth and SSC responded with three more. After they loaded the bases with two out, Jordi Camarillo came home on a passed ball and Selk drove in Liam Johnson and Kramer for the final runs of the game.
Selk had two of SSC’s five hits and drove in two while scoring a run. Kramer scored two runs and Begay, Verdoorn, Camarillo and Johnson added runs.
Begay, Colby Rager and Luis Vicente Banos pitched for SSC in their tournament finale.
