SSC boys run away with River Cities title

Running in a pack helped the South Sioux City boys to run away with a conference title.

All four of the Cardinals’ runners finished in the top 10 as SSC outscored Omaha Skutt 31-45 to claim top honors at Thursday’s River Cities Conference Championships, held at South Ridge Golf Course in South Sioux City.

On a near-perfect fall afternoon, the Cardinals were led by senior Luke McGinty, who came home in a time of 16:38.94 to lead the way for the locals. Mel Munzambi, Leandro Magana and Nabiil Yussuf were not far behind, as their fifth-through-seventh finish put the Cardinals on top of the team standings.

All six SSC runners ended up in the top 11. Caleb Preciado finished 10th and Yahir Mejia-Covarrbias placed 11th among the 29 runners in the boys race.

The SSC girls didn’t have enough runners to post a team score, but all four saw personal times improve in their final tuneup before districts.

Kalianne Norton led the Lady Cards with a 12th place time of 21:32.62, and Abigail Cisneros was not far behind in 14th place. Melanie Magana Perez finished 19th and Ducle Alonso was 24th.

Both teams will run in district action next week at Lincoln’s Pioneers Park. The top three teams and top 15 individuals qualify for state competition on Oct. 24 in Kearney.
